Durban at a glance

Located on the shores of the east coast of South Africa, Durban is the largest city in the KwaZulu-Natal province and the third most populated, after Cape Town and Johannesburg. Known for being home to arguably the busiest port in the country, Durban boasts a lively and active business district, rife with industry and commerce.

The Durban Central Business District

The Durban Central Business District, located in the heart of the city, is characterised by the old architecture and vibrant mix of commercial space that enjoys a constant flow of foot traffic. Here iconic buildings make up its skyline, with older architecture including the Durban Natural Science Museum, City Hall, Durban Central Post Office and Old Railway Station. And newer buildings such as the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) and the Hilton Hotel - hinting at the modern development this area has enjoyed.

Neighboured by the Durban Harbour, Morningside, Umbilo and the ever busy uMgeni Road, the CBD is made up of a network of streets, including; Dr Pixley Kaseme Street (West Street), Anton Lembede Street (Smith Street), Dr A B Xuma Street and Monty Naicker Road.

Proximity To Points Of Interest

The CBD, as the centre of Durban, is located in proximity to surrounding points of interest - which further adds to its convenience.

  • 40 km from the King Shaka International Airport
  • 17 km from uMhlanga
  • 14 km from Westville
  • 77.5 km from Pietermaritzburg

Transport and Location

As one of South Africa’s largest metros, the Durban CBD is serviced by an abundance of transport options that can be used by clients, employers and employees alike. From its train station, bus services, both metred and minibus taxis to Uber.

Linking Durban with large centres such as Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg is the N3 Western Freeway. While the N2 Outer Ring Road connects Durban to the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga. The N2, N3, M4 and R102 further run between surrounding residential nodes, making it easier for employees to commute to and from work each day.

Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre

Attracting business travellers from across the globe, the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC first opened its doors in 1997 by the former South African president, Nelson Mandela.  As the first international convention centre in the country, the Durban ICC has played host to many local and international events, conferences and other business activity. This multi-purpose event space consists of 112,000m² flexible exhibition and meeting space.

Durban Club Place

Known as “The Professional Quarter”, Durban Club Place is a sought-after business destination, boasting contemporary office space, exclusive members club, well-crafted public spaces, business facilities and restaurants. This business destination is also popular among legal professionals, due to its location to the Durban courts, with many lawyers, advocates and legal aids establishing their chambers in these highrise buildings. Built in the 60’s and 70’s - Durban Club Place has been restored and renovated, boasting modern design and services.

Shopping In Durban CBD And Surrounds

Due to its landscape of retail and commerce, there are many shopping opportunities and places where employees can spend their lunch hour unwinding before heading back to the office. These destinations range from a plethora of small independently owned pavement level merchants to large centres and leading franchises. SHopping opportunities in the CBD include; the Qualbert Centre, Boardwalk Centre, Liberty Towers, St. George’s Arcade, The Workshop, Madressa Arcade and the entire stretch of Dr Pixley Kaseme Street. If you travel into the Berea, malls such as the Musgrave and Windermere Centre also provide shoppers with a convenient place to do some after work grocery shopping. Windermere has also seen the revamp (by Kamdar Group) of one of its older buildings on Sandile Thusi Road - now a thriving modern Roman’s Pizza eatery.

The Durban CBD is an area that is ever growing. With a large economy and international interest, it could be the business destination you have been searching for. If you are interested in finding the perfect space for your business, contact Kamdar Group today.
